We will assist you in finding appropriate and qualified medical care for your pregnancy. You may continue seeing your own doctor if you wish, or we can recommend an obstetrician and arrange an appointment for you. If you have not yet seen a doctor, we will encourage you to begin prenatal care immediately.
LEGAL SERVICES:
It is important that you, your baby and the adoptive couple are protected legally. Childplace has skilled and experienced legal specialists who understand the sensitive process of adoption. Each case is different, so the legal process for your situation will be discussed with you. The amount of time involved is also different. Some children and mothers are ready for placement from the hospital while other situations may take a few days.
COMMON QUESTIONS:
Q. How long do I have to change my mind?
A. You can change your mind at any time up until you sign the paperwork terminating your parental rights. That would not occur until after your child is born and the time frame varies from state to state. Your adoption caseworker and/or attorney will discuss details with you.
Q. Can I pick a family for my child?
A. Yes! You can choose an adoptive family that has been approved by our agency.
Q. How do I know the adoptive family is a good family?
A. All of our families are thoroughly screened. We conduct criminal and child abuse background checks on both spouses. We require physical exams for anyone living in the home. They must also complete a financial statement. We also require references from friends, family members, employers, and church leaders. These are kept confidential from the family so that they do not know what has been written about them. We interview each spouse individually as well as together and conduct a physical inspection of their home. They are asked questions about their childhood, family relationships, marital relationship, criminal history (including traffic violations), communication skills, along with numerous other topics.
Q. Can I see or hold the baby in the hospital?
A. Yes. While you are in the hospital, the nurses and doctors will honor your choices. You have many different options. You may also decide that you may not want to see or hold the baby. The decision is yours.
Q. Where does the baby go after it is discharged from the hospital?
A. The infant is placed in one our licensed Nursery Care homes until the legal process is complete and the child is legally available for adoption. These families care for only one infant at a time and take pictures of the infant to give to the adoptive family at placement. They ARE NOT state foster care homes.
Q. Can I find out anything about my child after he/she is placed with a family?
A. Yes! We will share with you what we know. You have various options through our agency. However, state laws prohibit written contracts regarding on-going contact. This can be explained in more detail by your caseworker. Most families are willing to send pictures/letters a few times a year so that you can see how your child is doing. This is done through the agency, so no identifying information (last names, address, etc.) is revealed to you or the adoptive family.
Q. Do I have to pay anything?
A. No. You do not owe Childplace anything for placing your child for adoption through our agency.
Q. What if I have other questions?
A. For confidential answers to any questions you may have, please click HERE for a list of phone numbers where we can be reached.
